About Us...
The Geneseo Art League was formed in 1957 "...to encourage interest in art among the members and the community at large, and to provide an environment for creative activity. It shall give artists an opportunity to exhibit and to receive instruction and training," states the constitution. "It will give persons of all ages and levels of skill an opportunity to study and explore a variety of art media."
The Art League's founding members, whose vision has inspired so many over the years: Jean Sieben, Kathy Koop, Edna Bartholomew, Olga Chamberlain, Roxie Aud, Elberta Collier, Jane Fehlman, Donna Hanford, Helga Neuleib, Ruth Sorter, Chris Zajic, Jeni Zimmerman, Larry Dorothy.
In a testament to tenacity -- and a bow to the
amazing amount of local talent, along with indefatigueable workers
amongst it's past and present members -- the Geneseo Art League has reached
it's FIFTIETH year of existence!
Geneseo Art League began with just a handful
of painters who felt a great need to gather in support of one another and
to foster the arts in this small community of 6,500 residents. As a
not-for-profit group, the League depends upon the generosity of The Geneseo
Foundation and loyal patrons -- along with a nominal yearly dues (presently
$30, with student membership of $10) and engages in fund-raising activities on
it's own behalf. There are, presently, approximately 30 active
members; additionally, we have a large patron and business support group.
For eight successive years, Geneseo
Art League has sponsored a "
The League has, for 29 years, sponsored the
Maple City Fine Arts Show in May, when artists from a wide surrounding
geographic area are invited to submit works to be juried. Prizes are
awarded during an open house held at The Cellar Restaurant and the
award-winning creations, along with all entries, are shown for the month
of May at both The Cellar and at the League's Studio and Gallery.
The range of creative talent of the League's
membership includes oil painters, watercolor painters, acrylic painters, mixed
media artists, wood-working and jewelry, plus photographers and a
sculptor. All types of creative work are encouraged and welcomed; the
only requirement is an interest in art! Members often donate -- both
individually and as a group -- works of art for charitable and/or community
causes.
